Twenty nine mountaineers who have summited the highest peak on earth, Mt. Everest, will gather at a rally in front of the United Nations building on Wednesday to draw attention to the effects of climate change on the Himalayas. An Awareness Rally is to be held on 21st September 2010 (Tuesday) at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, 47th Street, New York, USA while world leaders gathered in the United Nations. The rally will be staged from Noon till 4 PM and will be joined by a crowd of 100s including environmentalists, Nepalese-American immigrants, Nepal’s Minister of Forest and Soil Conservation, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Coordinator of the event, Mr. Ang Chhiring Sherpa, a NY resident and First South Asian Journalist to summit Mt. Everest, informs the event is staged to coincide with the 65th United Nations General Assembly, which began convening in New York on the 15th. They will be joined by climber such as Kaji Sherpa who set the world record in mountaineering history , Tenji Sherpa who scaled Mount Everest 8 times and Pasang Rinji Sherpa for 6 times and many more.
This event is committed to draw the attention of world leaders and to express their love and concerns for the climate change in the Himalaya.
